Sarah Beetson

B. 1981
Manchester, United Kingdom

Artist Statement
Sarah is inspired to subvert and interpret modern popular culture. Her paintings are preocupied with recurrent themes of gender and gender-bending, the subversion and manipulation of sexual roles and identities; drag queens, transsexuals and gay and lesbian subculture. She often aims to explore and expose global political issues. The darker face of fashion is another common element, surfacing in personal identity, eating disorders and body image. She attempts to portray her subjects in a manner which is non-conformist to society-imposed stereotypes and persistently twists and contradicts the preconceptions of popular consciousness.
